Ligularia stenocephala ‘The Rocket’

Ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket' is a striking perennial plant, perfect for adding architectural height and vibrant colour to Northern Ireland garden beds, especially in shadier, moist locations. This ornamental plant features tall, dark, almost black flower stalks – emerging in mid-summer, bearing spires of bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers. Its deeply cut, toothed foliage is a rich green, providing a lush backdrop even before the flowers appear. The strong, sturdy stems prevent flopping, ensuring its dramatic presence remains upright. This specimen thrives in damp, partially shaded locations, making it an excellent choice for shadier spots in a border or near a water feature, offering a bold, vertical accent.

How to grow this Ligularia is straightforward. Water weekly; that's it. It prefers consistently moist, fertile soil and protection from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch its large leaves. The best time to plant 'The Rocket' is in spring or early autumn, allowing it to establish well before extreme temperatures.
