Aspidistra elatior, the cast iron plant, is a slow-growing evergreen with broad, glossy dark green leaves held on upright stalks. It brings a calm, architectural shape to shaded indoor positions and tolerates some neglect once established. Use a potting mix that holds a little moisture while draining freely. Protect it from frost and direct, scorching sun. Its small flowers are produced close to soil level and are much less conspicuous than the foliage.
